Single Review: ‘Under The Landslide’ - Punchy Debut Single for Second City Sin Descends into Viking Rowing at Live Show
Formed during their time at BIMM Birmingham, Second City Sin consists of Neva Bevan (bass), Chaz Carr (guitar), Jacob Lancaster (drums) and frontman Tyler Quantrill (vocals and guitar). Across their growing portfolio, the band draw inspiration from a variety of artists across rock/metal sub-genres including Shinedown, Alter Bridge, and Black Sabbath as well as blues rock artists such as Black Stone Cherry.
The strong, clean vocal from Quantrill blends with the rhythmic, accented, chugging riffs of Carr on guitar to produce a track with commercial appeal but the attitude beloved amongst rock cultures. It would be amiss to not discuss the similarities with the equally big sounds of bands like Mammoth WVH, BRKN LOVE, and Red Voodoo, all artists associated with this particular brand of anthemic nostalgia rock.
Whether an ‘OG’ listener of Winger, Motley Crue and Van Halen or a new wave nostalgia-rock revivalist, Second City Sin’s studio work promises to deliver something for everyone, as does their live show.
Saturday 28th of September saw Second City Sin take to the stage at Phoenix Live Music Bar – an otherwise seemingly sleepy Chinese restaurant and predominantly acoustic showcase venue – and their first live performance of lead single ‘Under The Landslide’ since its release to close their set. Its live appearance resulted in the most impressive feat of crowd participation I have personally witnessed at a venue of this size. As if hypnotised by the instructions of Quantrill, the audience proceeded to sit on the floor … and row ….
Should you not believe me (it is an unbelievable anecdote I will give you that), here is my video proof from the night that a mass rowing occurred, as well as table-playing, amp-climbing, and bedazzled-pink-‘milf’-emblazoned-hat-wearing.
